Skul the hero slayer bones12/28/2023 While this is very much in keeping with the nature of roguelikes, one thing that makes the experience of starting over and over again less painful was when returning to a level it wasn’t just the level layout that was randomized but the items you would find as well as how ‘explorable’ an area would be. After every defeat (and there will be so, so many defeats) you are sent back to the starting hub to take on the next stage once again very beginning with all your powers and upgrades lost. This clear progression helps give the game more of a ‘Mario’ vibe, where you go through different worlds on your way to the end rather than the endless dungeons I have found myself in lately in games like Neon Abyss.īut don’t mistake this for a traditional action/platform as Skul: The Hero Slayer is very much also a roguelike through and through. There’s a clear level structure here that gives the game a real sense of progression which can be hard to find in games where everything is essentially random. What helps set this one apart though from the throngs of similar games is that Skul: The Hero Slayer is much more linear in its progression than most roguelike games. So what exactly does Skul: The Hero Slayer play like? Well, it’s a bit of mishmash of two genres, the action platformer (a la Hollow Knight) and the roguelike (a la almost every other game on Earth). With all hope seemingly lost, one lone skeleton warrior, the diminutive Skul, sets off on a quest to set the world back to its proper state of affairs and return the kingdom of monsters to its former glory. While you may be thinking, ‘hey fewer demons running around sounds like a good thing’, the humans were only able to achieve this by allying with the mysterious Hero of Caerleon, whose aims could spell ruin for the entire world. The humans and heroes of the world have brutally destroyed the skeleton army and imprisoned the Demon King, leaving his castle and empire in ruins. Skul: The Hero Slayer beings with something clearly amiss. How does it all shape up? Read on for our full impressions! Here’s a game that puts classic video game fodder in the role of the hero on an epic quest to restore order to the world. But what if the tables were turned? Could a ‘simple’ skeleton be capable of heroic deeds? if Skul: The Hero Slayer gets its way, then yes, absolutely. This has been made obvious thanks to games like The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania, titles we’ve been enjoying for decades. While Skul is in reality not a prequel to Hades, it possesses several features that may credit it as a worthy precursor to the more popular dungeon-crawler.Any gamer worth their salt will know that skeletons are among the most basic, and usually weak enemy that you could run up against. It goes by the name of Skul: The Hero Slayer. The form it takes is a combination of a roguelike and a platformer. Betwixt these two, lies an almost invisible two-dimensional virtual realm. Hades features the rebellious Zagreus who runs across dungeon rooms, blasting enemies. Skul is fun, buy it while the inaugural sale is still on. I consider that quite un-‘humerus’ of them. Unlike Hades, which provides us worthy upgrades to rush through rooms, Skul is more punishing. While the fun visuals trick you into playing reckless, without a strategy - the permadeath ultimately hurts us. Like energy blasts, increased melee attack impacts and crit damage. The otherwise modest seeming skeleton suddenly acquires stunning new abilities. He also possesses a special ‘quintessence’ power. Skul can throw his skull at enemies in a powerful action. But quite suddenly, the action escalates. The enemies cowering with sad quips will make you chuckle, the way you do at a meme. To begin with, Skul’s dash and slash action will keep you entertained. You gain these creatively named upgrades (there’s one called fracture prevention which has helped me the most so far) by earning the treasured Dark Quartz, which may be obtained by destroying skilled enemies.Īs is with the protagonists of action-adventure games, Skul employs a fair bit of skullduggery to make combat consistently exciting. Your shame lands you on the platform with a Witch, who sells you increasingly expensive upgrades to your ‘skull, bone and spirit’. Like Hades, Skul employs permadeath - which means that you start from the start every time your HP reduces to zero. Skul sets out on a risky adventure to dash and slash through evil humans that haunt his realm and rescue his king from captivity. Not the lazy bones kind of skeleton, but one that was bone to be wild. Skul released last week for the PC, after coming out of Early Access.
